Les mouvements de rotation des molécules apparaissent sous forme de bosses dans une gamme d’énergie de 10-2 à 10 meV [méga-électronvolts] environ. L’interprétation de la mesure exige d’utiliser un modèle comme celui de la rotation libre (cas des gaz) ou celui de la rotation gênée (diffusion de rotation). Comme les temps caractéristiques des rotations et des translations sont souvent du même ordre de grandeur, c’est la convolution de ces mouvements qui apparaît sur le spectre, ce qui en complique le dépouillement.
