Les sonars latéraux procurent des images acoustiques des fonds océaniques. Installé sur un engin remorqué près du fond, ce type de sonar émet, en incidence très rasante, une impulsion brève en haute fréquence (le plus souvent de 100 à 400 kHz) qui court sur le fond dans un faisceau transversal très étroit; le signal renvoyé en fonction du temps et de la réflectivité locale reproduit alors les détails des irrégularités, obstacles et changements de nature sédimentaire, avec une résolution de quelques centimètres.
