Le principe du thermomètre à renversement («reversing thermometer» en anglais, «Umkehrthermometer» en allemand, «oprokidyvaïouchtchïïssia termometer» en russe) réside dans le fait que la température se bloque à la profondeur souhaitée, car [la] colonne de mercure se brise [au moment] du renversement du thermomètre (qui se fait souvent par le choc produit par une navette ou un messager qu'on fait glisser le long du câble). La température ne subit donc aucune influence [au moment] de la remontée. L'autre difficulté concernait la déformation due à la pression qui, dans les lacs très profonds, est telle que la lecture en est transformée. Au XIXème siècle, les trois questions fondamentales que se posent les océanographes concernent la topographie des fonds, les conditions physiques du milieu, l'existence et la nature de la faune sous-marine. Les outils dont on dispose pour y répondre sont sommaires. Pour mesurer la profondeur, on utilise une ligne de sonde, à main ou à manivelle.
