A complex series of primate erythrocyte antigens that is determined by an unknown number of tightly linked genes which map as a single locus (symbolized Rh0) to the distal short arm of human chromosome 1. The series was originally determined by immunizing rabbits to erythrocytes from rhesus monkeys.

Système sanguin nommé d'après le nom du singe (rhésus) ayant servi à Landsteiner Wiener (1946) à l'expérience capitale qui est à son origine. Ces chercheurs injectèrent du sang du singe rhésus dans l'oreille du lapin, suscitant ainsi chez ce dernier l'apparition d'anticorps (appelés anti-Rh), capables d'agglutiner le sang de certains hommes. Le facteur Rh est un agglutinogène situé à la surface des érythrocytes, indépendant des agglutinogènes A et B du système ABO. On le trouve dans le sang de 85 % des sujets qui sont alors dits Rh+, les autres étant Rh-.
