CONT

Early writers on the business cycle, possessing little quantitative information, tended to attach disproportionate attention to panics and crises such as the collapse of the South Sea Bubble in 1720, the panic of 1837, the jay Cooke panic of 1873, the Cleveland panic of 1893, the "rich man's panic" of 1904, and, of course, the cataclysmic stock-market crash of "black Tuesday", October 29, 1929.
