La couche de base a pour but d'augmenter la stabilité et la rigidité de la fondation. Elle mesure de 7,5 à 10 cm d'épaisseur. On utilise pour cette couche un béton bitumineux ou un bitumacadam.

OBS

Le béton bitumineux est un mélange de pierre concassée (0-3,75 cm) contenant de 50 à 70 % de particules retenues au tamis de 4,75 mm et enrobée de 3 à 5,5 % de bitume solide. [...] Le bitumacadam consiste en deux ou plusieurs couches de pierre concassée agglomérée sur la route au moyen d'une émulsion à prise rapide.
