El crédito rotativo constituye una especial forma de pago, de manifiesta utilidad cuando se trata de compra-ventas que se surten a través de despachos sucesivos durante cierto período, generalmente prolongado. Por virtud de la cláusula de rotación el vendedor obtiene la seguridad de recibir por parte del banco, el pago de cada uno de sus despachos, siempre y cuando se cumplan las condiciones generales del crédito. El comprador por su parte, goza de la facilidad de no tener que pagar de un solo contado todo el valor de las mercancías, sino que lo hará a medida que se vayan efectuando los embarques parciales.
