Le seul nom que les Tsiganes se donnent eux-mêmes, c'est le nom de Rom (masculin singulier) qui signifie «époux». Ils emploient aussi Romni (au féminin) et Roma (au pluriel, masculin et féminin). Tous les autres termes servant à identifier les Tsiganes ont été donnés par des non-Rom. Habituellement, le terme de Rom désigne les Tsiganes d'Europe centrale.
