Les femmes enceintes suivies au Buchanan Hospital de Hastings (Sussex, Grande-Bretagne) peuvent utiliser la première «chaise à accoucher». Il semblerait que le fait de redresser l'abdomen à la verticale aide la mère à mieux respirer, améliore la circulation sanguine vers l'utérus et le placenta, et aide la bébé à se dégager. Paul Degen, l'inventeur de la chaise, l'a baptisée Roma Birth Wheel, en l'honneur de sa fille Roma, premier bébé à être né de la sorte.
