La portion méridionale de la mer de Ross est fermée par la «barrière de Ross», falaise de glace derrière laquelle s'étend la «plate-forme flottante de Ross», surface glacielle partie de la calotte glaciaire antarctique.

La mer de Ross pénètre la calotte glaciaire antarctique. Elle est bornée par la terre Victoria (continentale), la barrière de Ross ou banquise de Ross (glaciaire) et les fluctuations de la banquise au-delà de la terre Marie-Byrd.
