In 1863 Emperor Napoleon III permitted the artists whose work had been rejected by the high-handed jury of the official Salon to hold a counter-exhibition. ... An agitation followed which prompted the authorities to show all works condemned by the jury in a special show called the "Salon of the Rejected".
