The sand engine (also called sand motor) is a type of beach nourishment where a large volume of sediment is added to a coast. The natural forces of wind, waves and tides then distribute the sand along the coast over many years, preventing the need for repetitive beach nourishment.

Le principe du moteur de sable ou Zandmotor est simple. Il s'agit d'un banc de sable artificiel construit le long d'un littoral sableux, en forme de péninsule et d'une superficie de 1 km² environ. Ce sable sera ensuite déplacé au fil des années par l'action des vagues, du vent et des courants le long de la côte.
