SAS (pronounced "sass"), which once stood for "statistical analysis software," was created ... , in the early 1970s to analyze agricultural-research data. SAS Institute was founded in 1976 to develop and sell the software as demand mushroomed. After evolving into the world's leading provider of software and services for business intelligence, the company dropped "Institute" from its name but kept the name SAS, no longer an acronym.
