Water may absorb oxygen from the atmosphere when the oxygen in solution falls below saturation ... Unpolluted water maintains in solution the maximum quantity of dissolved oxygen. The saturation value is a function of temperature and the concentration of dissolved substances, such as chlorides.

L'habitude qui s'est instaurée de comparer la teneur d'une eau naturelle en oxygène à celle qu'elle aurait si elle pouvait en contenir le plus a donné naissance à la notion de teneur à la saturation. [Olszewski] a montré que la valeur théorique ne correspondait pas toujours à la valeur réelle obtenue en mélangeant intimement l'air atmosphérique et l'eau naturelle (...) La notion de saturation doit alors être remplacée par celle de norme, [et] la valeur à la saturation par des points de norme (ou mieux valeur normale).
