The Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM). The functional part of an STM consists of a metal tip, often tungsten, mounted on a piezoelectric tripod to allow motion in three dimensions. Le microscope à effet tunnel permet en général d'atteindre la résolution atomique sur des surfaces de métaux ou de semi-conducteurs.
