A method of secret writing ... consisting in writing the message on a strip of parchment wound spirally round a cylindrical or tapering staff, so that it became illegible when the parchment was unrolled, and could be read only by the use of a staff of precisely the right form and size.

OBS

Après avoir enroulé [le parchemin sur le bâton], le message était écrit en plaçant une lettre sur chaque circonvolution. Pour le déchiffrer, le destinataire devait posséder un bâton d'un diamètre identique à celui utilisé pour l'encodage. Il lui suffisait alors d'enrouler [le parchemin] autour de ce bâton pour obtenir le message en clair.
