À mesure que la calotte glaciaire du Groenland fond et perd de la masse, elle exerce moins d'attraction gravitationnelle sur l'eau en haute mer, et l'eau migre donc loin de la calotte glaciaire. Ainsi, cela produit à la fois un abaissement du niveau de la mer près du Groenland, mais aussi une montée des eaux à des distances plus importantes, en dehors de la région.
