In latitudes marked by distinct seasons, a seasonal thermocline at much shallower depths forms during the summer as a result of solar heating, and it is destroyed by diminished insolation and increased surface turbulence during the winter.

Dans les zones tempérées, l'alternance des saisons permet l'instauration d'une thermocline saisonnière : elle apparaît au printemps avec le réchauffement progressif des eaux superficielles. Ce dernier s'accentue et provoque un enfoncement de la thermocline jusqu'à son plein développement à la fin de l'été [...] À l'automne, la décroissance des températures superficielles résorbe progressivement la thermocline jusqu'à l'homothermie hivernale de la colonne d'eau.
