On appelle semi-consonne ou semi-voyelle un type de sons caractérisé par un degré d'aperture de la cavité buccale intermédiaire entre celui de la consonne la plus ouverte et celui de la voyelle la plus fermée.

OBS

La distinction entre semi-consonne et semi-voyelle est établie par certains linguistes en fonction de critères syntagmatiques: on donnerait le nom de semi-consonne à l'unité qui se trouve en début de syllabe, devant la voyelle, et celui de semi-voyelle à celle qui se trouve après la voyelle. En fait, cette distinction ne semble pas justifiée linguistiquement.
