Pour des sections polarisant très peu (dans les teintes gris foncé), il y a intérêt à superposer une lame auxiliaire de retard connu, afin que la teinte résultante arrive dans une région de la gamme où l'appréciation en soit facile. On emploie alors de préférence un «quartz teinte-sensible», dont la teinte passe immédiatement au bleu ou au rouge lorsque son retard est légèrement augmenté ou diminué.
