The primary shareholders of the Hudson's Bay Company lived in London, England. They were usually members of the nobility or aristocracy, with the occasional very wealthy merchant. Few of these men ever travelled to Canada. Instead, they hired officers and servants to oversee business at the company's trading posts. Officers were paid a salary and expected to make a career with the Hudson's Bay Company. Servants were generally paid by contract.
