The set is a pass intended for one specific purpose, to place the ball above and near the net so that a front row player can jump and attack it. Although the set can be performed on the first or second contact by any player, it is generally made on the second play by one of two players specifically designated by the team to perform this task. This specialist is called a setter.

Originally the person who set the rough or prepared diamond into a dop for sawing, bruting, and polishing. Today, the term commonly refers to one who sets the stones in sawing dops, but it may also be used to describe the technician who positions diamonds in automated polishing machines.

Now the marked stone can be set. This is usually done by setters (mostly female workers) who choose the appropriate "pot" in which the stone can be set. ... When the cement is ready, the setter places the stone, after having carefully examined its crystallisation, in a pot filled with cement.
