The Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant is a Government-owned, contractor-operated military installation. The installation began operations in 1942. The primary operational mission of the installation was to manufacture smokeless powder and single-, double-, and triple-base propellants.

The name of the plant was changed from the Sunflower Ordnance Works to Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant (SFAAP) on August 1, 1963.

The Department of the Army no longer requires the facility for ammunition production ... Due to past production activities at the installation, some portions of the installation are contaminated ... Clean-up operations are currently on going, with further efforts planned.
