L'option principale retenue en France, pour les déchets de la catégorie A, dont l'essentiel de la radioactivité aura disparu dans 300 ans, est leur stockage en surface, ou à faible profondeur. Leur isolement est assuré par des barrières artificielles les protégeant notamment contre les eaux de ruissellement et souterraines.
