Satellite observations over the past two decades have shown that the plasma universe consists of large volumes, which exhibit the fluid properties described above, separated by thin sheets of "plasma turbulence" and strong electric currents in which the "fluid" description is not adequate.

Un feuillet de plasma sépare la moitié nord de la moitié sud de la queue magnétosphérique. Ce feuillet, dont l'énergie thermique est de plusieurs milliers d'électrons-volts, est parcouru par un courant transversal qui s'écoule de droite à gauche quand on regarde le soleil.

L'équation de Vlasov permet également d'étudier de nombreux processus linéaires entre ondes; ces divers mécanismes jouent un rôle très important dans les plasmas «turbulents».
