Le soudage avec arc court (dit aussi : en régime sous-critique) donne lieu à un transfert par courts-circuits : le fil est fin (diamètre de 0,6 à 1,2 mm), le grossissement de la goutte entraîne une diminution de la longueur d'arc et une baisse de tension. Lorsque la goutte touche le bain (longueur d'arc nulle), la tension tend vers 0 et l'arc s'éteint. Le courant continuant de passer et la résistance de la portion de circuit comprise entre le tube de contact et la pièce étant très faible, l'intensité croît [...] l'effet de pincement augmente [dû à la puissance des forces électromagnétiques]. Soumise à cet effet à l'action de la tension superficielle du bain, la goutte se détache. Puis la tension s'élève et l'arc se réamorce. Une autre goutte se forme et le cycle recommence.
