The side bypass thermostat functions similarly to the poppet type. It has a circular sleeve below the valve that moves with the valve as it opens. This partially blocks the bypass circuit and, in doing so, directs most of the coolant flow to the radiator.

Le thermostat à dérivation latérale fonctionne de façon similaire à celui de type à soupape simple. Il possède un manchon circulaire en dessous de la soupape qui se déplace avec la soupape durant lʼouverture de celle-ci : ce mouvement bloque partiellement le circuit de dérivation et dirige la circulation en grande partie vers le radiateur.
