The upper part of the theodolite, rotatable in the horizontal plane, is termed the alidade, originally an Arabic word meaning a sighting rule.

Partie d'un théodolite ou d'un tachéomètre, tournant autour de l'axe principal, et munie d'un dispositif permettant les lectures azimutales sur le limbe du cercle horizontal.

OBS

L'extrémité de la règle porte un trait gravé appelé «index de lecture». L'alidade sert à mesurer des angles à partir d'une origine 0 du limbe, ou à tracer des directions, que ces directions soient visées «à l'œil nu» ou par l'intermédiaire d'une lunette.
