Furness considérait les modèles virtuels comme des sortes de machines à tester des hypothèses pour la CAO, de la même manière que les feuilles de calcul servent aux financiers. C'est ce qu'on appelle également la reproduction dynamique de la simulation, c'est-à-dire le fait de créer une simulation obéissant à certaines règles internes, puis de l'appliquer à différentes situations pour voir comment réagit l'ensemble du système.
