SINGLE-ELECTRON TRANSISTOR [2 records]

Record 1 2022-09-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Semiconductors (Electronics)
  • Electronic Components
DEF

[A] sensitive electronic device based on the Coulomb blockade effect.

CONT

Such a rapid variation in conductance makes the single-electron transistor an ideal device for high-precision electrometry. In this type of application the SET has two gate electrodes, and the bias voltage is kept close to the Coulomb blockade voltage to enhance the sensitivity of the current to changes in the gate voltage.

Domaine(s)
  • Semi-conducteurs (Électronique)
  • Composants électroniques
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Computer Hardware
DEF

One of the devices first devised in the 1980s, that work on a common principle (a kind of crowd-control for electrons). The kind called "single-electron transistor", can be switched on or off by a single electron. Another, the "resonant-tunnelling transistor" can have a number of distinct states between "on" and "off".

OBS

Contrast with field-effect transistor.
