El ópalo se encuentra en las cavidades de las rocas magmáticas y sedimentarias en forma de venas o de masas blancas, amarillentas, verdes, pardas o rojizas. Es un verdadero coloide que contiene de 3 a 13 % de agua, un mineral vítreo, de fractura concoidea, aspecto lechoso y reflejos irisados, cuyas variedades más hermosas constituyen gemas apreciadas para joyas y objetos artísticos.
