An anomalously high transit time in a log, such as a continuous velocity log, observable as a spike on the log, commonly caused by the presence of fractures, gas, unconsolidated formations, aerated drilling mud and enlarged boreholes.

Pour les sauts de cycle, l'onde de première arrivée au récepteur éloigné peut être trop faible pour dépasser le seuil de détection de sorte que le système d'acquisition n'est déclenché que par une arrivée plus tardive. Quand ce phénomène se produit, l'intervalle de temps enregistré sera trop grand étant donné qu'il correspond à l'intervalle entre l'arrivée de l'onde au récepteur le plus éloigné et l'arrivée de l'onde qui a dépassé le seuil de détection.
