Groupe de langues de la famille indo-européenne, parlées en Europe centrale et orientale et en ex-U.R.S.S. Les langues slaves se répartissent en trois sous-groupes : le slave méridional, le slave oriental, le slave occidental. L'écriture de ces langues varie. Les langues parlées par les peuples de tradition orthodoxe utilisent l'alphabet cyrillique, les autres de tradition catholique ou protestante se servent de l'alphabet latin, complété, selon les langues, de diagrammes et de signes diacritiques; l'écriture glagolitique n'a plus qu'un intérêt historique.
