L'incorporation d'eau dans un liant hydraulique (ciment, chaux hydraulique) déclenche, par hydratation des sels minéraux amorphes et anhydres, des réactions irréversibles de formation de cristaux en aiguilles dont l'enchevêtrement épaissit et «solidifie» la pâte. Cet affermissement, qui peut être très soudain, marque le début de prise. [...] Ne pas confondre prise et durcissement: ce dernier fait suite à la prise, pendant plusieurs jours à plusieurs mois, progressivement, sans dégagement de chaleur; il s'accompagne de l'élimination de l'eau de gâchage excédentaire, et des phénomènes de retrait.
