La forme des éléments des radiateurs en fonte s'est maintenant cristallisée autour de trois types : l'élément à petite colonnes, l'élément à grosses colonnes et l'élément du type hôpital. L'élément à petites colonnes est constitué par plusieurs tubes (deux, quatre ou six, en général) connectés en haut, en bas et à un ou plusieurs niveaux intermédiaires. Les colonnes des éléments sont généralement alignées perpendiculairement à la paroi contre laquelle est installé le radiateur, tandis que l'axe des nipples est parallèle à cette paroi (...) Le radiateur en fonte à petites colonnes (4 ou 6 colonnes) est de loin le plus répandu des radiateurs en France.
