Any metallurgical operation in which metal is separated by fusion from those impurities with which it may be chemically combined or physically mixed, such as in ores.

CONT

Smelting refers specifically to those high-temperature processes whereby ore and gangue minerals are chemically altered, fluxed and reduced to form a low-density molten slag and one or more heavier liquid metals or metallic compounds.

OBS

When metallic ores are exposed to heat, and such reagents as develop the metal, it is called smelting in contradistinction from the mere application of heat, causing the ore to become fluid, which is called melting.

Opération métallurgique qui permet d'obtenir un métal, un alliage ou un produit intermédiaire (matte), par passage partiel ou total à l'état liquide. Suivant la nature du composé réagissant, la fusion peut être réductrice, oxydante, carburante, sulfurante ou scorifiante.

CONT

Dans les opérations de fusion, on obtient toujours au minimum trois phases : a) une phase ignée réduite, qui est le métal ou la matte, parfois un carbure, un siliciure, un arséniure (speiss), b) une phase oxydée qui est un laitier ou une scorie, rarement un sel fondu, c) une phase gazeuse, constituée principalement par les gaz de combustion (sauf dans le cas des fours électriques).

OBS

Le terme «fusion» est employé aussi pour désigner la liquéfaction d'un métal sous le seul effet de chaleur, c'est-à-dire sans l'addition d'un réactif chimique; l'équivalent anglais dans ce cas est «melting». L'interprétation correcte du terme est déterminée à partir de son contexte.
