La Société psychanalytique de Montréal a été fondée en 1969 et est une section de la Société canadienne de psychanalyse. Celle-ci est une composante de l’Association psychanalytique internationale, fondée en 1910 par Sigmund Freud.

En tant que regroupement de psychanalystes elle a pour objet l’étude du champ de la psychanalyse ainsi que la promotion de celle-ci en tant qu’outil clinique et de réflexion. De concert avec l’Institut psychanalytique de Montréal qui en est responsable, elle participe aussi à la formation des futurs psychanalystes.
