Such an electrode is termed a prebaked anode to distinguish it from the Soderberg anode, in which the electrode (single large anode to a cell) is formed in place from a carbonaceous paste which is baked by heat from the pot as it gradually descends into the electrolyte.

Anode Söderberg. Il y a une seule anode par cuve. Elle est constituée par une gaine métallique verticale et rectangulaire dans laquelle est placé un mélange de coke et de brai. [...] L'anode, suspendue par les goujons, peut glisser à l'intérieur de la gaine. Elle est consommée, à sa partie inférieure, par l'électrolyse. Cette consommation est compensée par un apport périodique de pâte crue à la partie supérieure.
