C'est pourquoi un réacteur surgénérateur comme Super Phenix utilisait le Sodium fondu comme caloporteur. Le Sodium a beaucoup de qualités aussi bien neutroniques que thermodynamiques, mais il prend feu spontanément à l'air et explose au contact de l'eau. Il s'ensuit que des mesures draconiennes, et donc coûteuses, sont nécessaires pour éviter que ne se déclenche un feu de Sodium. C'est pourquoi des recherches sont en cours pour remplacer le Sodium par un autre caloporteur, par exemple le Plomb fondu ou un gaz.
