Close mowing reduces leaf area and thus reduces the bacteria levels. Close mowing also helps to maximise daytime solar radiation absorption into the soil.

Dans le cas d'un port horizontal des feuilles, l'absorption est maximale dans une tranche de végétation de faible épaisseur. Dans le cas au contraire où le port du feuillage est vertical, la lumière solaire peut pénétrer beaucoup plus profondément dans le couvert.
