SOUNDING [6 records]

Record 1 2023-06-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cartography
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Marine and River Navigation Aids
CONT

... soundings given on a nautical chart ... are relative to the chart's datum, rather than the water's surface. ... Soundings are measured from chart datum, which is usually the lowest level you can expect the tide to reach. This means that any amount of tide should increase the depth of water, making it safer for navigation.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Measurements and Analyses
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Sonar and Underwater Detection (Military)
CONT

Depth sounding refers to the act of measuring depth. It is often referred to simply as sounding. Data taken from soundings are used in bathymetry to make maps of the floor of a body of water, and were traditionally shown on nautical charts in fathoms and feet.

Record 4 2004-10-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
  • Remote Sensing
DEF

An observation made in the free atmosphere either directly or indirectly.

OBS

upper-air observation. This is a general term, but is usually applied to those observations that are used in the analysis of upper-air charts (as opposed to measurements of upper-atmospheric quantities primarily for research). Among the elements evaluated are pressure, temperature, relative humidity (e.g., by radiosonde aircraft observations), and wind speed and direction (e.g., by rawinsonde, aircraft, or wind profiling radars). Also, some mountain stations are high enough and exposed enough so that their observations may be included in the upper-air network at their elevation.

OBS

At each [weather] station, measurements are taken of such things as air pressure and temperature, wind speed, cloud cover, and precipitation. Elsewhere, upper-level observations are made by weather balloons, and satellites, which send a continuous flow of photographs back to earth.

OBS

upper-air observations : plural form standardized by ISO.

Key term(s)
  • upper air sounding
  • upper level observation

French

Domaine(s)
  • Stations, instruments et équipements météorologiques
  • Télédétection
DEF

Observation effectuée dans l'atmosphère libre, soit directement, soit indirectement.

OBS

Record 6 1997-06-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Ship Communications (Military)
DEF

The operation of measuring the depth from the free surface to the bed.

CONT

Soundings are measurements of ocean depth made from ships. Early sounding techniques were tedious and provided a limited picture of ocean depths, but with the development of modern echo sounders it became possible to map the ocean floor in detail.

OBS

sounding: terminology officially approved by the Naval Terminology Standardization Committee.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
  • Communications en mer (Militaire)
DEF

OBS
