The Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission is to promote sustainable and equitable economic growth and socio-economic development through efficient productive systems, deeper co-operation and integration, good governance, and durable peace and security, so that the region emerges as a competitive and effective player in international relations and the world economy. The Community was preceded by the Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC).

La Communauté de développement de l'Afrique australe (SADC) existe depuis le 1er avril 1980 et avait pour objectif principal de faire de la coordination pour les projets de développement. Après avoir reçu la charte juridique le 17 août 1992, la vision de la Communauté était celle d’un futur commun, avec une communauté régionale qui devait assurer le bien-être économique, l’amélioration du niveau et de la qualité de vie, la liberté, la justice sociale, la paix et la sécurité pour les peuples de l’Afrique australe.
