The need for high efficiency devices is self-evident in the field of space photovoltaics, for power generation on satellites: the devices of choice are multijunction tandem cells, whose costs are not actually a big concern if compared to the overall building and deployment costs of a satellite.

Le photovoltaïque spatial. L'atmosphère absorbe une partie de l'énergie solaire. Si on plaçait des panneaux photovoltaïques dans l'espace, on récupérerait plus efficacement l'énergie du Soleil [...] Il s'agit de mettre des km² de panneaux solaires en orbite géostationnaire, à 36 000 km² d'altitude. L'énergie solaire reçue est plus intense et on oriente les panneaux, pour un éclairement maximal. On reçoit ainsi, en moyenne, 8 fois plus d'énergie par unité de surface qu'au sol.
