The Special Rapporteur on Indigenous People (SRIP), to name only one, was first appointed in 2001. His mandate is considered complementary to that of the other two entities devoted specifically to the promotion and protection of indigenous rights within the UN system: the Working Group on Indigenous Populations and the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
