Clinical trials have shown that clozapine helps about 30 percent of those schizophrenic patients who do not respond to other antipsychotic medications or who develop intolerable side effects. This drug's unusual properties, such as its specific interaction with certain dopamine and serotonin receptors (D4 and 5HT2), may help in the effort to understand schizophrenia itself.
