A condition in which there are abnormally thick, almost spherical, red blood cells or spherocytes in the blood. This is seen most commonly in haemolytic spherocytic anaemia and acholuric jaundice.

La maladie de Minkowski-Chauffard ou sphérocytose héréditaire [est] une anémie hémolytique constitutionnelle liée à une anomalie de la membrane érythrocytaire. [Elle] est caractérisée par la présence de sphérocytes, c'est-à-dire des hématies denses, de petit diamètre, sans pâleur centrale, qui ont perdu leur forme biconcave pour devenir sphérique.
