The time variation of the focal plane speckle is achieved by a process known as smoothing by spectral dispersion (SSD). In SSD, a small amount of frequency modulated (FM) bandwidth is added to the laser, and this is angularly dispersed using a diffraction grating in the front end.

A technique that uses the concept of thresholding to limit the displayed volumetric data. The threshold allows the user to select the range of pixel values rendered in the 3D model. For example, a higher bone threshold ... can be chosen to build a skeletal model of the patient's skull. Decreasing the threshold to include voxels with soft tissue attenuation values results in a 3D model with the patient's skin intact.

A breeding procedure in which plants are advanced by single seed from one generation to the next.

The single seed descent method separates the step toward homozygosity and the selection step. The initial step to enhance progress toward homozygosity by advancing the generations as rapidly as possible and subsequently to select among the randomly derived inbred lines. To maintain manageable levels of segrating populations, one randomly chosen seed is planted from each previous-generation plant. After reaching homozygosity, conventional performance trials are conducted.

The term "SSD" is used for two different kinds of products. The first, SSDs based on fast, volatile memory such as SDRAM [synchronous dynamic random access memory], ... The second type of SSD uses flash memory to store data.

An SSD does much the same job functionally (e.g., saving your data while the system is off, booting your system, etc.) as an HDD [hard disk drive], but instead of a magnetic coating on top of platters, the data is stored on interconnected flash memory chips that retain the data even when there's no power present.
