La monographie s'oppose à la statistique: étudiant des faits isolés et non des phénomènes de masses, elle affecte une forme qualitative ou descriptive et non une forme quantitative, cherchant à grouper des faits et à calculer des grandeurs caractéristiques. La méthode se résume dans le choix d'un échantillon, l'étude approfondie de l'échantillon, et l'induction de celui-ci à l'ensemble. Le procédé de l'enquête monographique, illustré par les travaux de Le Play sur les familles d'ouvriers européens et d'ouvriers des deux Mondes, a l'avantage de fournir, au lieu de moyennes et de totaux, qui sont des choses abstraites, une tranche de vie réelle.
