A crown group consists of the last common ancestor of a living group of organisms (i.e., the most immediate ancestor shared by at least two species), and all its descendants. ... A stem group consists entirely of extinct organisms that display some, but not all, the morphological features of their closest crown group. Studying stem group animals reveals clues to the timing and order that different features were acquired within particular lineages.

Un groupe couronne rassemble le dernier ancêtre commun d'un groupe d'organismes existant encore actuellement (c'est-à-dire l'ancêtre le plus immédiat que se partagent au moins deux espèces) et toute sa descendance. [...] Un groupe souche rassemble des organismes éteints qui présentent certains des caractères morphologiques du groupe couronne qui en est le plus proche, mais pas tous. L'étude des animaux d'un groupe souche donne des indices sur l'époque à laquelle remonte l'acquisition de divers caractères et sur leur ordre d'apparition au sein de certaines lignées.
