Leader stroke of a first discharge of lightning in which the ionized channel is propagated by successive jumps.

CONT

The first stroke is initiated by a preliminary breakdown in the cloud, which channels a negative charge toward the ground in a series of short luminous steps called the step leader.

Pictures of cloud-to-cloud discharges taken with special cameras show a faint luminosity proceeding downward in a series of jumps ..., and sometimes forking or branching. This phenomenon is called a stepped leader.

Dans les coups de foudre descendant, le traceur négatif prend naissance dans le sein des masses négatives du nuage [...] Il progresse ensuite en direction du sol, par bonds successifs de quelques dizaines de mètres (c'est le stepped leader [...]), et avec une vitesse moyenne comprise entre 0,15 et 1,5 mètre par microseconde. Au fur et à mesure de sa progression, on assiste à de nombreuses ramifications orientées vers le bas, tandis que sa luminosité s'accroît.
